My Short Story

Short Story
Tim Starman
Creative Writing

It was just another Monday morning on Oak St. Everyday started the same, hearing the blaring music every morning at 6:30am. I woke up slower than normal, letting the depression sink in. Here for another classic Monday, filled with constant stares at the clock and complaining.

Mom was getting frustrated because I was taking a long time to get ready. I fell asleep fully about three times in the steaming hot shower. I got out just after 7:00, way behind schedule.
“BLAKE!!!!” she cried.
“I’ll be there in two seconds mother dearest”, I replied sarcastically.

It took me a good ten minutes to throw my clothes together and hop in my Volkswagen Golf, my one true love. The drive to school takes around 6 minutes if all the stop signs are nice to you.

I arrived to class with a quarter of a second to spare. Being to class early is normality for me, but today was different. Chemistry was one of my favorite subjects. Mixing and doing experiments is what I live for.
“Good morning class!” said Mr. Smith
Nobody replied and everyone might as well of been zombies.

In today's class we were starting a new experiment. Every experiment generally consists of mixing two, three, or even four different chemicals together, and then to record the changes (if any). Today was no different.

Today we were working with a chemical called 4-nitroaniline. The experiment was to mix this chemical with various other chemicals to see the change, if any.
“One final rule. Under no circumstance can you mix 4-nitroaniline and sulfuric acid, this would cause a potentially dangerous reaction” Mr. Smith proclaimed with certainty.

All the boys in the room go very excited and started chatting amongst themselves, while the cute girls shivered and got nervous.

I was sitting in class bored as always and my wonderful mind started to think. I’m always so bored of class and not being important. I decided to have a little fun today. Blake is most definitely going to mix these two chemicals.
I shoot my hand up into the air; Mr. Smith called on me,
“What would happen if I accidentally mixed these two?” trying hard not to sound too suspicious.
“Well there’s a chance that these two chemicals could cause an extremely large explosion, filling this whole school with smoke, and not to mention an awful smell. I know one time a chemist mixed these two chemicals and something bizarre happened.”

The whole class got tense, and leaned in a little closer to hear every word out of Smith’s mouth.
“The smoke cloud was so large that it took a fire crew to relive it. After many hours the smoke desolated, but not only the smoke, but something else did. Does anyone have any thoughts on what else disappeared?”
John Clarke rose his hand gingerly, “Ummmm the school?!”
“No, not the school”
I rose my hand at once, “The chemist himself?”
“This is true, no one knows what happened to him. We don’t know if he ever reappeared or not, let alone where he went in the process.”
Not not only the girls were silent, but even the starting quarterback.
Everyone did their experiment as told. We all saw little to no change in all the different chemicals. Teachers never gave us cool reactions to do, this was the downside of "high school" chemistry. This was going to change today, I knew it.
I grabbed hold of the 4-nitroaniline, and snuck the sulfuric acid without anyone seeing it. We were working with heated water while we mixed the chemicals. I poured in the nitrolliane and slowly added the sulfuric acid.
Out of nowhere, as Mr. Smith had said, there was a loud bang. The room was engulfed with a poignant awful smell of gas.
Everyone was in a state of panic, but I had gone somewhere else....

It was sometime in the way past, I would guess the mid  '60s. The classroom was very similar to our classroom, I’m guessing it’s the exact same room. Wandering around the classroom, I was curious if the other students could see or hear me.
Hello, my name is Blake” I  said rather shyly.
I was shooken up to realize the teacher started talking to me. I ended up staying in the class for the remainder of the day. I could get used to this way of life, everything seemed simpler and easier, unlike real life.
………..
The class was as dark as midnight. Mr. Smith had no idea what had happened.
Smith ran towards the source of the explosion, and all of a sudden he vanished, like Blake. Instead of the past, he was launched into the distant future, nothing was the same. He was thrown in front of a class full of what looked like students. Instead of a classroom he was on a spaceship, teaching future pilots.
Not having any idea what just happened he panicked and ran away, the kids just sat there and laughed at him. To them everything was totally normal, but for Smith he was bewildered and confused out of his mind. Eventually, he got a hang of what he was doing, it took him many years to understand piloting himself, let alone teaching it.

The transition from present life to the future was a lot easier than he thought. Technology was way beyond what he thought was possible, everything was simpler. Everyone was smarter and wiser. Every aspect of life was totally different, from the food you eat, to the houses you live in, even the core school subjects were totally different.

It was very hard for Mr. Smith to understand why he had to be stuck in the future. Don’t get him wrong he loved this time period, being a science teacher and all, but he had a family and a life back home. He hated that one of his students changed his life forever.

The cloud finally settled, and the class finally settled down. The first think the whole class saw was the disappearance of two people. They saw that Blake had randomly vanished into thin air, but Mr. Smith was also away.
“MRS. SMITHHHH”  A preppy white girl screamed.
           No response was heard.
“What the hell is going on in here?!”  the superintendent and this team rushed into the classroom.
President Frandel ordered the vice president to evacuate the whole school, this was one of the biggest school crises they’ve ever witnessed.
The intercom came on over the whole school,
“Attention students and teachers. There has been an accident in Mr. Smith’s chem class. Mr. Smith and fellow student Blake Peters has gone missing. I cannot give you anymore information than that, because we know about as much as you do at the moment. Class is dismissed, you all get home safe now, have a good day, and remember to be safe”

The whole school was absolutely silent. A teacher and a friend had gone missing. Everyone walked out of the school somberly. Girls and close friends of Blake’s were crying, while the rest were holding them back.
……….
This accident made the front of the paper as well as statewide news. It’s been two weeks after my disappearance.
The students and faculty of my high school still remember that day, they call it “Smoke Day”. They commemorate the disappearance of Mr. Smith and I.
We were never able to return to our present life, but we had a wild one. Neither one of us met back up, but I was able to experience the 60’s. Eventually, life felt normal, this era felt like me. I slowly forgot what life was like in 2015, it’s like a distant memory I had when I was little.
I had to pay for my simple mistake for my whole lifetime, and my poor teacher paid the consequences for his.  Never again did I not go against set rules, I was extremely respectful and loving, being the best man I can be. I worked the rest of my life making sure people don’t get too adventurous, and to think before you act.

Le Petit Prince

Today in French class we had to re write an ending to a well known story. My friend Jessica and I decided to do "Le Petit Prince". It is a very well known French short story. It's about a little prince who travels to different planets and meets many people. A long the way he teaches important philosophical morals and lessons to them. We had to finish the ending and change it. This is what we came up with.....

Careers in Writing

As you all know, I am doing this blog as part of an inquiry that I'm doing in school. One of my big topics of this project is researching different careers in the field of writing. There are three main categories in writing and they are Creative Writing, Business Writing, or Online Writing. All three are fairly specific in what you do.

Creative writing is what we all dream of becoming. We all grow up wanting to become the new J.K Rowling. Sadly this doesn't happen to the average Joe.  Creative writing can be anything from poetry, fiction writing, plays, screenplays, TV scripts, comedy writing, and etc. This is by far my favorite career path for writing because it always anyone to use there gifts, and write whatever they choose to. It can be about serious things, or wizards and made up worlds. You are fee to be yourself. It's a very stressful field, but if you're luck enough you might just make it. Good luck!

Business Writing is the next main category of writing. This is probably the most realistic and most used types of writing. These writers are journalists, advertisers and promotional people, technical writers, speechwriters, as well as textbook writers (they have to exist, I know). These jobs are very useful and a lot more available to the average writer. The only drawback on Business Writing is that it isn't nearly as fun to write speeches and textbooks, as it is to write your own fiction fairy tale.

The last main area in the field of writing is Online Writing. This is by far the newest area of writing. This field will soon take over because of the accessibility and ease of computing in the future. Everybody uses the Internet, whether it’s on their mobile devices or at home on the desk top. You read all sorts of things online that you don't even realize it. Someone has to do this and that's what these people are. Online writers often keep up companies websites, and create they e-mails business wide.

That was a background of all the possibilities a writing major can have. It's a tough major to get successful, but if it's your passion then go for it, what do you have to lose. It would be amazing if we could all be New York Times Best Sellers, but we also need online journalist and bloggers, as well as textbook authors. The options are limitless.

Mes Vacances

For my next "redactions" in French 4, we had to write a paper describing and explaining a favorite vacation. This could be a real vacation or a made up one. I made one up, because I went to Hogwarts in my story. This paper is a narrative, because I am explaining a story. It is a little bit of discription
work as well. And finally, it is all written in French of course! Enjoy.

Joining a Blogging Challenge

Today I was having a lot of trouble coming up with new posts to blog about.  A friend of mine told me about blogging challenges. So googled blogging challenges and some really fun ones came up. If you can see on the right of my blog you can see the blogging A-Z challenge.  This blog challenge starts April 1, and I have to post everyday, except Sunday. This will be a great way to get more views on my blog, and to get new ideas for my blog.

The focus of this blog is to post everyday. The special thing about the A-Z blog is that each blog has to use the letter in chronological order. Because my blog is about French I will be doing French topics with each letter. So for example, my first post could be "Airports in France", day two could be, "Bathrooms in France". This same theme goes on until you reach Z.

Reviewing French Tenses

Hello!/ Bonjour!

In post we will take a very simple English sentence, translate that into French, as well as putting it in all the tenses that we've learned so far. I think that it is very important to see all of the tense together in order to easily differentiate them. But the most important part of verb tenses is knowing when to use them. What situations do I match with what.

So these are a list of the verb tenses that I have learned so far, and reviewed on this blog:

1. Present tense
2. Immediate Past tense
3. Passé Composé
4. The Imperfect tense (L'imparfait)
5. Recent Future (Futur Proche)
6. Future tense
7. Conditional tense

Sentence: You (talking to a friend) play soccer. In French: Tu joues au foot. Now I will re type up 1-7 and put this sentence in all 7 tenses.

1. Tu joues au foot.
2. Tu viens de jouer au foot.
3.  Tu as joué au foot.
4. Tu jouais au foot.
5. Tu vas jouer au foot.
6. Tu joueras au foot.
7. Tu jouerais au foot.

Now that we can write these 7 tenses, the most important part of all is understanding the purpose of the different tenses. In my opinion the best way to go about this is to directly translate all 7 sentences back into English, this way we can understand the purpose.

1. You play soccer. (This is pretty basic, it's not in the future or the past, it's currently happening).
2. You came from playing soccer/ You just played soccer. (This is past, but shortly after it happened.)
3. You have played soccer/ You did play soccer/ You played soccer. (Past tense, completely happened. This is generally not right right after the event, but later that day, week, etc.)
4. You were playing soccer. ( This a repeated action in the past. Also descriptions, and emotional thoughts, such as "vouloire".)
5. You are going to play soccer. (This is a future event that is shortly going to happen.)
6. You will play soccer. (This is something that is going to happen, could be a year, 10 years, but WILL happen.)
7. You would play soccer. (Conditional is generally paired with an "if" clause. "You would play soccer, if you could". Just remember that conditional is always "would".)

Hopefully this post helped you review your French verb tenses. As I've said before these are extremely important to understand and know if you want to survive Paris.  Please leave a comment if you have and questions, or if you're confused about anything.

Thanks!/ Merci!

French Foreign Exchange Students

For the past three weeks our French 4 class has had two French students. It was so cool to hear their sound. They have the real French "r" that everybody envies. Just hearing them talk was so wonderful, and I could definitely say some words much  better because of them. We heard many stories and difference between school in the states and in France. Of course they liked it here much better, but we'd like it in France better, this is being human.

it's always so cool to communicate with someone of a different culture, language, lifestyle. It's so interesting and wonderful. If anything, they made me want to be in France that much more. One down side of only being here for three weeks is that they couldn't get fully immersed in the "American Life". But hopefully they learned a lot, and enjoyed their time here.

The future tense

Bonjour! / Hello!

The future tense in French is just like in English. You will do something. I "will" go to the movies tonight. I "will" go to school tomorrow. I "will" buy a car today. If you haven't already figured this out "will" is your key word in English. This is what you translate the French into. This is a very important tense, and allows you to say a lot more.

The formula for using future tense is simply your subject pronoun, infinitive of the verb, and the avoir ending. Here is a recap of the avoir endings.

Je:  -ai                          Nous: -avons

Tu: -as                         Vous: -avez

Il/Elle/On: -a               Ils/Elles: -ont

So now we know how to form the future tense, now let's try to use it in context. Let's say "I will eat". So let's think about the formula. The subject pronoun is "I", in French this is "Je". Remember that you don't actually directly have say "will" in French, this is just the definition in English. So after you have the subect "je" you need to figure out what verb to use, in this case "to eat", or "manger".  Do you remember what you do with this verb? It's very simple, take the infinitive "manger" and add the avoir ending that corresponds with the subject. As you know or see about the avoir ending for je is -ai. So manger + -ai becomes mangerai. So all together it becomes "Je mangerai", or "I will eat".

Merci/ Thank you!

l'imparfait et le passé composé

L'imparfait and le passé composé are two common past tenses in French. To say something that is completely over and done with, you would use the passé composé. So say an on going activity in the past you would use the imparfait. L'impfarfait is also used for description and repeated actions.  It's important to decide which tense to use, and sometimes this can be confusing. You can easily tell which tense to use, if you learn key phrases that start sentence (every morning, frequently, this Monday). For exapmple "Chaque matin" or "each morning" would be l'imparfait because it happened every morning, more then one. Keep working on the differences and soon it'll be easy. Don't worry, I'm still even working on it.

Here is how you form the passeé composé. First, the subject pronoun second, the conjugation of avoir or être thrid, the past participle of your verb. "j'ai mangé"

Here is how you form l'imparfait. It's just the subject pronoun along with your imperfect ending. Remeber to take the nous form of the verb, then take off the -ons and add the correct ending.

Je:  ais                    Nous: ions

Tu: ais                    Vous: iez

Il/Elle/On:   ait       Ils/Elles: aient

Lesson de français #5 ER, RE, and IR Verbs

Bonjour!/ Hello!

French verbs are such an important part in learning a language. If you know the formula and ending of verbs it's simple to form them. ER, RE, and IR verbs all have specific endings that don't change, except for irregular verbs. Once you know the endings of all three verbs you can say thousands of verbs, and start to write in French.

These are the endings for ER verbs:

Je:  e                          Nous: ons

Tu:  es                        Vous: ez

Il/Elle/On:  e              Ils/Elles: ent

These are the endings for RE verbs:

Je:  s                          Nous: ons

Tu: s                          Vous: ez

Il/Elle/On: nothing       Ils/Elles: ent

These are the endings for the IR verbs:

Je:     is                      Nous: issons

Tu:    is                      Vous: issez

Il/Elle/On:  it               Ils/Elles: issent

Now after you memorize the endings that correspond with each kind of verb it's easy to form the verb. All you have to do is drop the ER, RE, or IR from the end of the infinitive (dictionary form), and add the appropriate endings.

Example of an ER verb:

Parler: To speak

Je: Parle                       Nous: Parlons

Tu: Parles                     Vous: Parlez

Il/Elle/On: Parle             Ils/Elles: Parlent

Example of an RE verb:

Descendre: To go down

Je: Descends                  Nous: Descendons

Tu: Descends                  Vous: Descendez

Il/Elle/On: Descend         Ils/Elles:  Descendent

Example of an IR verb:

Choisir: To choose

Je: Choisis                       Nous: Choisissons

Tu: Choisis                      Vous: Choisissez

Il/Elle/On: Choisit             Ils/Elles: Choisissent

I've given you an example verb for each of the "regular" French verbs. There are irregular versb as well, and they have special endings (like avoir and être). But if you know these three regula verbs you already know about 75% of the French verbs, congrats!

Merci!/ Thank you!

French Video Lesson #2 Avoir et Être

Leçon de Français #3 Être et Avoir

Bonjour!/ Hello!

One of the most important parts of learning a foreign language are the verbs. Once you know the pronouns verbs are the next step. You can't say very much if you don't know verbs. The two most crucial and most used verbs in French are "Être" and "Avoir"

Avoir in English is to have, and être in English is to be. These verbs are not only important because they are frequently used, but because they are also auxiliary. An auxiliary verb is used to form the passé composé (J'ai mangé). In J'ai mangé, the "ai" is avoir. In Enlgish we would say "I have eaten, I did eat, or I ate". You would use être in the same fashion, but it is not as commonly used.

The conjugations for the verb avoir:

Je:  J'ai                 Nous:  avons

Tu:  as                 Vous:  avez

Il/Elle/on: a         Ils/Elles:  ont

The conjugations for the verb être:

Je:  suis                Nous:  sommes

Tu:  es                  Vous:  êtes

Il/Elle/On:  est      Ils/Elles:  sont

It's important to notice that these verbs are irregular. In French there are many common or regular verbs that all have the same endings (this will be another lesson). I wanted to teach you these two verbs first, because they are vital to learn the language of love.

I will create a video soon reintroducing these verbs to you guys. There, you will be able to hear and repeat the verbs along with the pronouns.

Thank you for watching, and make sure to comment if you have any concerns or questions.

Merci!/ Thank you!

Leçon de Français #2 Passé Recent et Passé Composé

Bonjour!/ Hello!

This is my second education post. Sorry for being a little advanced to the complete beginers, becuase we haven't gone over French basics. I'm sharing with you French verb tenses, because this is a great tool for you, and a great way for me to practice and review.

Before I go completely over your head with new information, lets go over the French pronouns.

Je- I
Tu- You
Il/Elle/On- He, She, People in general
Nous- We
Vous: You (formal), or You guys
Ils/Elles- They (mixed gender group), They (completely girls, not a single boy)

The most basic past tense is the recent past. This is saying "I cam from" and then whatever your verb is. The verb to come is "venir". There is a very basic formula to from the "passé recent", it is simply "venir" (conjugated to the pronoun) + "de" + "l'infinitive" (of the verb you just did). For example I could say "Je chante" or "I sing", in the passé recent this become "Je viens de chanter" or "I came from singing". This is the recent past so it's used for things you have just done, not something that happened last week.

Venir: to come

Je: viens                        Nous: venons

Tu: viens                       Vous: venez

Il/Elle/On: vient             Ils/Elles: viennent

Avoir: to have

Je: ai                              Nous: avons

Tu: as                            Vous:  avez

Il/Elle/On: a                   Ils/Elles: ont

The next most simple, and commonly used past tense is called the "passé composé". This is to tell someone what you have done. This is different from the recent past, because it's something that's completely done, and finished. Also, passé composé can be from a long time ago, as well as more recent. The formula for the passé composé  is simple as well. "subject/pronoun" + "helping verb" + "past participial". The two most used helping verbs that we have in French are "avoir" et "être". I wont get into much detail on which verb goes with which helping verb, because this can be confusing. Let's stick with the verb "chanter" or "to sing". Chanter's helping verb is avoir (most verbs use avoir). After deciding on which helping verb to use you will use the formula to form your sentence. So lets plug it in. "J'ai chanté", or "I have sung". So lets review, I used the pronoun "Je", which is "I" in French. Next, I conjugated "avoir" for Je, (which is "ai, or J'ai). Finally, we add the past participle of "chanter" which is "chanté" to the end of the phrase. This is how you form the passé compossé. For more advanced French linguistics, remember to watch out for your "vandertramps", or être verbs", and whether or not they're  transitive, or intransitive.

French verbs and conjugating can be the most frustrating part of learning French, or any language. It's important to keep repeating and practicing, as well as never giving up. Once you are able to conjugate  verbs, and once you know these simple French verb tenses, you can start speaking, reading, writing, and thinking in French!

 À Bientôt!/ See you soon!
